mc admin decommission

Syntax

The mc admin decommission command starts the decommissioning process for an AIStor server pools. Decommissioning is designed for removing an older server pool whose hardware is no longer sufficient or performant compared to the pools in the deployment. AIStor automatically migrates data from the decommissioned pool to the remaining pools in the deployment based on the ratio of free space available in each pool. The process ignores unreadable objects, such as those that have lost read quorum, and continues with remaining objects in the pool.

See Decommission Server Pools for a complete procedure on decommissioning a server pool.

mc admin [GLOBALFLAGS] decommission start|status|cancel ALIAS TARGET

Parameters

start

Required

Starts the decommissioning process for the server pool specified to TARGET.

Requires specifying TARGET

Mutually exclusive with status and cancel.

status

Required

Returns the decommissioning status of server pools on the specified ALIAS.

Status values:

  • Active - The pool is active and not scheduled for decommissioning.
  • Draining - The pool is currently decommissioning.
  • Complete - The decommissioning process finished successfully.
  • Failed - The decommissioning process failed and requires manual restart.
  • Canceled - The decommissioning process was manually cancelled.

Without TARGET: Displays a summary table of all pools with their ID, endpoint, usage percentage, status, and objects moved (if any decommission activity exists).

With TARGET: Displays detailed information for a single pool including:

  • Pool Information (endpoint, pool ID, usage, start time, duration)
  • Migration Progress (objects moved, data moved, remaining data, transfer speed, ETA)
  • Next Steps with actionable guidance based on the current status

Mutually exclusive with start and cancel.

cancel

Required

Cancels an ongoing decommissioning process on the pool specified to TARGET.

Requires specifying TARGET.

Cancelling a decommissioning process does not return the pool to an active state. You must eventually complete the decommissioning process and remove the pool from the deployment. You can resume the process by running mc admin decommission start again against the pool.

Mutually exclusive with start and status.

ALIAS

Required

The alias of the AIStor deployment on which to start the decommissioning process.

TARGET

The full description of the server pool on which the command operates. For example:

https://minio-{01...04}.example.net:9000/mnt/disk{1...4}
